Sustainable communities strive to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. The Sustainability and Smart Growth Initiative aims to stengthen and preserve the quality of life of Westchester's residents while planning for the needs of their children and grandchildren. The Foundation supports programs in four areas: Energy Efficiency, Transportation Reform, Protection and Preservation of Natural Resources, and Sustainable Food Shed. Energy Efficiency Grants Grant range: $15,000 - $30,000 Requests will be considered throughout the year. For more information, contact Laura Rossi-Ortiz, Program Officer, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , or (914) 948-5166 ext. 4. Invited proposals will be due on January 13, 2012, April 27, 2012, July 6, 2012, and September 7, 2012. Transportation Reform Grants Westchester’s history as a first suburb and its historic patterns of growth has resulted in an over-dependence on automobiles and few alternatives for those who do not drive. The absence of a transportation network that is responsive to the needs of residents and those commuting to its workplaces creates negative environmental, economic, and health impacts. Poor air quality, risk of injury to pedestrians and bicyclist, higher rates of obesity and diminished mobility are just a few of these negative impacts. The Foundation supports advocacy efforts to promote a more equitable and environmentally sustainable transportation network in the region. Priority is placed on programs that engage community groups in land use and transportation programs. Examples of eligible projects include advocacy for expanded transit options, safer roads for pedestrians and bicyclists, and efforts to strengthen citizen input into solutions to transportation and land use issues. Grant range: $15,000 - $30,000 Requests will be considered throughout the year. Grants to Protect and Preserve Natural Resources The Foundation will continue to support projects that protect and preserve Westchester’s natural resources in the following areas: · Preservation of biological diversity through habitat conservation; · Preservation and restoration of ocean, estuarine, coastal, and wetlands habitat, particularly in the Sound Shore communities; · Protection of drinking water quality; · Promotion of land conservation, particularly in Central and Southern Westchester; and · Projects that alter the destruction of agricultural and industrial practices. Priority will be given to projects that promote knowledge-sharing and development of best practices. Grant range: $15,000 - $30,000 Grants are awarded on a competitive basis.
